This is my first blog on the website. I know not many people will see it yet, but I believe that one day more and more people will visit this page, get to know my brand, and see what I’m working on.
To be an artist, what is it truly mean?
I was born into a Chinese cultural background, where pursuing art is not something people would usually encourage. The majority of society tells you: get high scores, achieve great grades, go to a top university, study a “respectable” subject, secure a stable job — and then you will be successful.
So what if your dream is to be an artist? People will ask: What do you mean by that? What do artists actually do? Sell their work? But how much can you really sell it for? Can you actually make a living from it?
Recently, I realised that walking a creative path, choosing to become an artist and making a living from it, something that barely exists in the system we grew up with.
By “system,” I mean the structure I mentioned above: rules, boundaries, expectations. They are important and necessary in many parts of life. But for an art career, they don’t quite fit.
And that’s okay. If the majority don’t understand, then let it be. Because as an artist, what you create is not for the majority — it is often for the minority. And that is exactly what makes it special and unique.
If someone never identifies themselves as an artist, then they are not truly an artist. Being an artist is not just about producing works — it’s about who you are. Behind every pieces lies part of the artist: their reflections, their experiences, their unique perspective on the world. Even their pain and struggles become art.
